NBSN Conference 2016 Highlights

February 26, 2016

Good Afternoon!

Many thanks to those of you who attended our 32nd Annual 2016 NBSN Conference, Preserving our Heritage Moving Forward.  It was a huge success, many thanks again to the Virginia Planning Committee for putting on a great conference as well as Elvira Wise-Smith, Charlyn Shepard, and Rose Tapp.  You have certainly set the bar high!

Many have asked the meaning of the bird that you have seen on all of the conference materials….

The Power of Sankofa ~ Sankofa is an African word from the Akan tribe in Ghana.  The literal translation of the word and the symbol is “it is not taboo to fetch what is at risk of being left behind.”   The word is derived from the words” SAN (return), KO (go), FA (look, seek and take).  The Sankofa symbolizes the Akan people’s quest for knowledge among the Akan with the implication that the quest is based on critical examination, and intelligent and patient investigation.  The Symbol is based on a mythical bird with its feet firmly planted forward with its head turned backwards.  Thus the Akan belief that the past serves as a guide for planning the future.  To the Akan it is this wisdom in learning from the past which ensures a strong future.  The Akans believe that there must be movement and new learning as time passes, but as this forward march proceeds, the knowledge of the past must never be forgotten.

Highlights from the meeting ~

The NBSN Board met for two full days and discussed strategies for the coming year, as well as reviewing the proposed budget. We have also been adding to our Standard Operating Procedures that will help us stay within the constitution and bylaws which is very important to us and will also serve as a guide when we are no longer in office. The body also approved the Proposed Budget for the coming year.  There were many great discussions at our business meetings, one in particular centered around the tragedy that is taking place in Flint Michigan. The water crisis is just horrible. I recently heard of a family of six that passed away from poisoning, I am sure there are many other horrible stories just like this one. The basic necessities of taking a bath, brushing your teeth are things we all take for granted. We decided to pass the hat, the money collected will be sent on behalf of NBSN. Any small thing that we can do will help. If you would like to make a contribution please send a check to:

Rosemarie Tapp NBSN Treasurer
333 S. Santa Fe Avenue
Compton, CA 90221

At the annual banquet we presented the Sam Ethridge Award to Senator Henry Marsh.  We also presented the JEGNA Award to our very own Cheryl McLeod who has been a champion in the African American community as well as to NBSN. We were honored to have Congressman Bobby Scott come and give greetings. The best treat of all was the video message from Jason George, who at the last minute was unable to attend due to his filming schedule. His message was very inspiring. We are asking permission to share and post his video to our Facebook page due to appearances by other actors on Grey’s Anatomy.

Elections were held for the following offices:

·         President

·         Secretary

·         2 At Large Director Seats

The successful candidates were:

Dawn Basurto, Re-elected President
Charlyn Shepard, Secretary
Wanda Turner, Director At Large
Joe Washington, Re-elected Director At Large

I would like to welcome our new members and thank Marsha for her service to the NBSN Board.  In addition, there was a recommendation from your National Conference Committee to elect Brian Todd, Marsha Meekins Cheatham and Trudi Brown-Clark to the National Conference Committee which was approved by the body.   Thank you for your vote of confidence in re-electing me as your President.

We are in the process of forming our committees for upcoming year, if you are interested, I have attached the descriptions of the committees as well as the Volunteer Form.  Please note that you must have your dues paid in order to participate on a committee.

The 2017 Conference will be held in San Antonio, stay tuned for more information.

I am very excited in the direction our network is going and with your continued support I am confident  we can build a Stronger Network, as our conference theme for this year indicates, Preserving our Heritage Moving Forward.

In Unity,
Dawn Basurto, President
NBSN
